Which metal detector is suitable for searching for coins?

Many experienced and novice numismatists (coin collectors), researchers of ancient monuments located under a thick layer of earth, prefer to search on their own, using a special device – a metal detector. A metal detector for coin search is a complex device with a variety of functions. There are different models on the market that, based on the experience of the excavator, can be divided into devices for beginners, intermediate level, and professional.

Main characteristics of metal detectors

Choosing a metal detector for coins, with the necessary knowledge, is quite simple. After familiarizing themselves with the functional features of the presented models, everyone will be able to choose an effective device for themselves that will look for coins, and not the underground iron trash can in huge quantities. The main functions of metal detectors for coin search include:

Discrimination scale.
Operating frequency.
Search file parameters.
Let’s take a closer look at each option.

Discrimination Scale

This option is very important for a metal detector. It allows the device to determine what kind of metal is in the ground. As a result, the collector will not dig worthless iron objects. The electrical conductivity of metal is an indicator of the level of adjustment of metal detectors. When an iron object or non-ferrous metal (silver, copper) is detected, a numerical value appears on this scale corresponding to the type of metal discovered. The lowest number for iron, the highest number for silver and copper.

To ensure easy search for coins, metal detectors are equipped with polyacoustic sounds. This eliminates the need to constantly look at the screen. To facilitate the search process, the device emits a separate sound for each metal:

ferrous metals are characterized by a dull sound;
For people of color – resonant.

Operating frequency

The performance of the device depends on this option – the lower the frequency, the lower the sensitivity to small objects with low conductivity. At higher frequencies, the sensitivity will be higher, but the penetration depth will decrease. The operating frequency depends on the file used.

Devices can operate at one frequency or simultaneously on several frequencies. The frequency in the detector can also be switched. This parameter is one of the main factors that are taken into account when buying a metal detector to search for coins at maximum depth. The frequency can be:

low (about 3 to 5 kHz);
medium (6 to 8 kHz);
high (from 14 to 20 kHz);
Very high (from 20 kHz and above).

Search file parameters

The depth of search as well as the sensitivity of the device depend on the file size. Files differ in shape from each other. They can be oblong, round, butterfly-shaped or oval. The stronger the file, the more likely it is to find the treasure. Coil is available in two types:

Single coil (used in metal detectors for budget models);
DD file (DoubleD);
Concentric.
It is worth noting that the best metal detector is an easy-to-use, understandable and perfectly hand-fitting detector.

Inappropriate models

Each metal detector has different technical characteristics. Devices are presented in several types. But not everyone can discover ancient coins. This must be known and taken into account when choosing a detector. There are several types of devices that are useless when looking for coins.

Depth detector. Their main purpose is to search for objects at great depths. But based on their features, the sensitivity of these detectors to small objects, including coins, is low. The scope of their application is treasure hunting, metal pipes, scrap metal.

Gold detector. Devices are not equipped with a discriminating scale. This leads to the fact that when searching for coins, the digger will find a shot, small pieces of iron and other garbage.

Mine detector. They are used by explosives experts when clearing. Such devices are of narrow concentration and do not have the functions necessary for searching for coins. Plus it is heavy.

Metal detector for children. Although these detectors have a low price, they cannot compete with MFPs due to the minimum number of options. Therefore, it is not recommended to use them to search for coins.

Best metal detectors for coins

Depending on the technical features and availability of options, the cost of metal detectors varies. But the opinion that the most expensive metal detector will be the best is erroneous. It all depends on your dreams.

Cheap devices with limited functionality are suitable for the entry level. It is suitable for occasional and not continuous use.
